  Landscape Characterization / Impervious Surfaces

Impervious Surfaces

The "Impervious Surfaces" section of the Chesapeake Bay From Space web site provides a "mini-curriculum" on land covers that repel water, restrict groundwater recharge, generate large volumes of storm water, and degrade water quality. Topics include: impervious surfaces as comprehensive environmental indicators of watershed health, watershed fundamentals, the types of impervious surfaces threatening watershed health, the environmental effects of increasing watershed imperviousness, and how-to-use impervious surface data for making informed land use decisions to preserve and protect the Chesapeake Bay and its associated land resources. Numerous links to other helpful web sites are found throughout "Impervious Surfaces." Also available is a paper, in PDF format, written specifically for this project entitled Impervious Surfaces and the Quality of Natural and Built Environments. It provides a more detailed overview of the environmental effects of impervious surfaces and includes a substantial bibliography.
