Landscape Characterization

The Landscape Characterization section of Chesapeake Bay and Mid-Atlantic from Space the Web site provides comprehensive information about land cover types and other landscape features that are useful for evaluating change over time. The Impervious Surfaces section offers a mini-curriculum on land covers that repel water, restrict groundwater recharge, generate large volumes of storm water, and degrade water quality. The Urban Sprawl section explores the features of land development that cause the rate of land consumed for urban purposes to exceed the rate of population growth, resulting in consumptive, inefficient use of land and resources. Data on the growth of impervious lands between 1990 and 2000 are used to assess urban development and sprawl within the region. The Forest Fragmentation section examines the ecological process that degrades the forest habitat of the Chesapeake Bay watershed when large, unbroken tracts of forest are split into separate, smaller parcels. The Landscape Characterization forum offers the opportunity for online information exchange.
