Information about the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Initiative

"The Chesapeake Bay Watershed Initiative (CBWI) is a long-term, multi-state aerospace science and technology program focusing on the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. It has been designed as an authentic scientific experiment that merges environmental education with community service and aerospace science and technology education."

"Our primary educational goal is to engage K-12 students in schools within and around the Chesapeake Bay Watershed in taking, analyzing, reporting, and monitoring the nutrient (nitrate and phosphate) content of tributaries within a watershed. Building upon these observations, students will be asked to relate weather phenomena, observed by conventional and satellite techniques, to their observations. Ultimately, they will be asked to observe and analyze images from Landsat satellites to determine if, and how, changes in land use and land cover with time may be affecting the nutrient content of these waters."
