Geospatial Data

This section of the Web site provides all the necessary data state and local officials will need to incorporate imperviousness into their water resource planning activities. Included in this section are three main types of data: Landsat 7 EMT+ data, derived data, and vector GIS data. The Landsat 7 EMT+ data includes raw satellite imagery in bands 1-7; and the 8-bit false color composite images 321, 432, 453, and 742. The derived data includes the impervious surface maps derived and clipped for each jurisdiction in the Chesapeake Bay basin; and a Normalized Difference in Vegetation Index (NDVI) for each jurisdiction, which essentially shows plant growth, or "greenness;" and a 40 Class Unsupervised Classification, which corresponds to 40 classes of land cover. Finally, a variety of other vector GIS data sets are made available, including county boundaries, land use/land covers, the National Wetlands Inventory, railroads, roads, streams, water bodies, and watersheds. Additionally, to encourage the use of the data, this section also includes quick start guides that teach Web site visitors how to use the various data with a variety of software packages including ArcView, ArcExplorer, IDRISI, and Erdas Imagine.
